Purdue University’s Biowall Improves Indoor Air Quality

The basic premise of most energy efficient homes is that they prevent the outdoor environment from seeping into the home, creating HVAC efficiency and reducing power consumption.  The goal is to seal air inside the home and keep outside air outside, but that has presented a new problem – air quality problems due to lack of ventilation.

A research team from Purdue University has attacked this problem by presenting a concept known as the “BioWall” to improve air quality in such airtight homes.

While not only cutting your monthly bills, you will also minimize the amount of electricity and gas used as you attempt to keep your home warm and comfortable throughout the winter months.

 

The California Energy Commission offers many tips to help save energy and cost alike during the winter months. With many options available to help manage the amount of gas and electricity, the amount of natural gas used will be easily reduced. Some of these include simply turning down the thermostat temperature when no one is home or turning down the setting on the hot water heater.

Lighting Matters - Minimize Energy Costs

Lighting accounts for a significant portion of your electricity bill. Approximately 12% of the average household’s energy costs are due to the lighting of the home. Thus, it does make financial sense to pay some attention to how your home is illuminated and make sure that you have energy efficient lighting.

Most families could save substantial amount of cash every year by just changing their light bulbs. It is easily done and if everybody in the country did it, (more than 4 billion screw-based sockets in the U.S.) billions of dollars would be saved every year.

Amendment 1: Overview of the Initiative to Limit Solar Credit

There is much for all of us to question about energy efficiency, especially in the use of power sources in our homes and the financial savings that are available versus the cost of initial purchase and installation.  It is easy to wonder, is it more expensive to purchase and install solar panels for constant renewable energy in the home or is it simply easier to pay a monthly electricity bill to the local utility company?

Well, the Florida Solar Energy Subsidies and Personal Solar Use Initiative, also known as Amendment 1, will be on the November 8 Florida voter ballot this year. As an initiated constitutional amendment, and per Article XI, Section in 2006, constitutional amendments in Florida require a 60% majority vote in order to be approved.
