Coal Plants Shutting Down Regardless of Politics

President Elect Trump and the Republican Party charged during the election that President Obama was waging a “war on coal” because he supported more stringent environmental regulations regarding carbon dioxide emissions. During the campaign, Trump got support from the coal industry because he said he was coal’s “last shot” at reviving the industry.

But economics, not politics, is the most significant reason for coal plant closings across the country.

Increase in Green Energy Jobs Hard to Ignore in Republican States

The increasing power of the green energy job market will make it difficult for even the most ardent right wing Republican to ignore.

Even though fossil fuel companies dump millions into Republican coffers to protect their subsidies and declining market share, America’s coal mines now employ about 56,700 people, down from a peak of more than 10 times that. Coal has dropped over the last decade from providing half of all U.S. electricity to about one-third.
